San Diego Trails: Discovery Creek

San Diego Trails: Discovery Creek

Discovery Creek in San Marcos is an easy, 2 mile round trip, it’s pretty flat and is suitable for hiking or horseback riding. Dogs are permitted if kept on a leash.  It follows the creek from Discovery Lake and has great views of the local “creeky” habitat (not creaky) as well as the mountains away to the south.  Loads of animals live here (which is why you need to keep a tight hold of the dog), listen out for the quail, there are tons of them and you generally hear them before you see them.

Discovery Creek has plenty of larger inhabitants too, coyotes, bobcat, deer, there was even a mountain lion sighted one time so do watch out for the tracks on the soft trail surface.  You can reach the trail via the parking lot of Lakeview Park, go a little way down the steep hill and the trail stays more or less parallel with the creek just below the dam.

Don’t worry, it wasn’t this mountain lion, I just thought it was a nice picture.
