San Diego Trails: Cowles Mountain

Cowles Mountain Trail is pretty short, pretty sweet but it’s definitely not easy. Basically it’s a 4.7 mile hike with a 3 mile vertical climb which really gets your heart pumping, and the views when you get to the top are spectacular. Well, at 1,592 feet it’s the highest point within the city of San Diego so what did you expect?

Cowles Mountain Trail is really popular and you’re likely to bump into plenty of other hikers (not literally I hope). It’s probably best tackled either early in the morning (really early if you want to meet less hikers) or late in the afternoons.  Lots of local people use the Cowles Mountain Trail as part of their regular exercise routines, you’ll even see people running up there!  Allow around 45 minutes to reach the top, and half as long to get back down again.  It really does make you feel like you’re on top of the world, well you are, kind of . . .
