San Diego Trails: Cima Drive Loop

San Diego Trails: Cima Drive Loop

Cima Drive Loop – this is a trail of two halves, well, two parts really, not necessarily halves, there’s the trail which runs along the creekside and is relatively easy, and a hill climbing trail which goes up the Cima incline to a water tank which is just that little bit more tricky (and exhausting). The loop takes you on a wonderful adventure into the open spaces just a little south of the Discovery Hills. In the beginning it is flat and easy with welcome shade provided by the Coast Live Oak and Sycamore trees, although you’re still advised to take plenty of water with you if it’s hot. The track actually covers around 3 miles which is made up of a soft surface by the creek, and then a single track up the hill and mountain. This is a little more difficult and is suitable for hikers, as well as experienced mountain bikers and experienced horseback riders.  There are some great views from the top, for anybody that makes it that far.

Cima Drive Loop starts from the parking lot at Discovery Lake, then heads west , down the hill and round the bend where the trail splits into two. For this adventure you need to take the left trail (soft surfaced) across the creek (it might be dry if you’re lucky) and follow the trail alongside the creek heading westwards.  A hike around this loop really is a great way to spend a couple of hours out and about in the fresh air.
