Need advice re. Grand Canyon

I am planning to hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon (and hopefully back to the top again) via the Bright Angel Trail, but am not sure what to expect. Could anyone who has made the trip before equate it with a local hike that I could use for practice? For example, could anyone say "If you can go up & down Stonewall Peak 3 times in one day you can make it out of the Grand Canyon without paying for a helicopter"? or whatever might seem to be equivalent? Many thanks in advance.
